A movie that I watched recently
Last Thursday, I watched a film called Brooklyn directed by John Crowley, which is an adaptation from the novel with the same name written by Colm Tóibín. The film begins with the Irish girl, Eilis, working at Miss Kelly’s grocery shop, which is quite popular in the town. However, Miss Kelly is demanding and she earned little. Thus, after Father Flood proposed to sponsor her to work in America, she finally accepted and took a boat there. At first, she encountered serious homesickness. Luckily, she overcame it and met her love, Tony, who is a diligent plumber. However, Rose’s sudden death smashed Eilis’s happiness, and she decided to go back to Ireland. After knowing her departure for Ireland, Tony proposed to her and they got married secretly. After returning to Ireland, Eilis faced the dilemma of choosing between Ireland and America. In Ireland, she had a good time with her mom and polite Jim; on the other side, in Brooklyn, New York, she had better chance of self-development and her husband, Tony, was still waiting for her.
Eilis’s change
In the movie, we can see the great
difference after Eilis worked in America.
She became more confident, and knew
her passion. Eilis was not a country girl at all. Her appearance was appreciated by the people living in Enniscorthy and they changed their attitude toward her. In this small town, people talking about her all the time. It's appealing to most people that someone could change a lot after going abroad. However, it's really tough when making a decision between one's original family and one's future career.
To sum up, it's a quite attractive movie worthy of watching. The struggle of being an immigrant is so realistic that the viewers would be touched.
